The Artful Teaching Residency structure is a malleable model, meant to conform to the needs of both teachers and teaching artists. It starts with the INSPIRATION of seeing arts teaching done successfully and then launches into a cycle of COLLABORATION, INTEGRATION and reflective CELEBRATION. Teachers and teaching artists collaborate to devise a residency plan and determine how many iterations of this cycle will happen to achieve their learning goals.

​ARTFUL TEACHERS CONTRIBUTE:

  • Assistance in planning developmentally appropriate arts learning goals (you know your students!). Provide ideas for appropriate adaptations for students with special needs.
  • Possible curriculum connections and curricular learning goals and provide teaching artist with any necessary curricular resources (textbooks, primary resources, etc.)
  • Participation during lesson as agreed upon with artist: work alongside students, provide feedback, assess learning, classroom management, lead activities
  • Participation in residency reflection with teaching artist
  • Time to collaboratively plan and document the work (using Residency Planning Guide) with teaching artist

TEACHING ARTISTS CONTRIBUTE:

  • A clear focus and careful planning of developmentally appropriate learning goals in their art form.
  • Time to reflect and collaborate with ArtLabs/host teacher(s)
  • An outline/reference packet of what students will learn, how to assess if the learning goals have been met, and the process steps of the lesson.
  • Ideas for the teacher’s role during the lesson: participate alongside students, provide feedback, assess student learning, classroom management, lead activities
  • A list of supplies and classroom setup needs
  • Participation in residency reflection with teachers
